Cedar Privacy Fence — Gardner, KS
Cedar privacy fence in Gardner
We installed 110 linear feet of 6-foot horizontal cedar slat privacy fence along the rear yard perimeter. Boards are 1x4 select cedar at 1/4-inch spacing, green PT posts at 36-inch depth in poured concrete, three vertical cleats per section for mid-span board support. The install was completed in a single day.
The Gardner homeowner chose horizontal cedar to match the profile of the privacy fence the neighbor on the adjacent lot had installed the season before — a rare case where coordinating fence styles across property lines made visual sense. Gardner's southern expansion zone has newer lots where neighbors are building out simultaneously. Coordinating fence styles along shared lines is something we see more in new-development contexts.
Southern KC exposure at Gardner
Gardner sits at the southernmost edge of the regular KC metro service area — further south than most of our Olathe or Overland Park jobs. Wind exposure increases as you move away from the urban core, which is why three-cleat construction on horizontal boards is standard here. Our 6-foot cedar privacy fence specs don't change between northern Overland Park and southern Gardner — the same 36-inch post depth, the same concrete footing standard.
Fence complete, spring staining on schedule
The November install gives the cedar a winter to stabilize before the first stain coat in spring. Fresh cedar shouldn't be stained immediately — it needs 30 days minimum, and many homeowners prefer to wait for spring weather anyway. When the stain appointment comes, the fence staining crew will document the moisture content before applying to make sure the wood is ready.
